Household waste to biochar: an alternative to charcoal in savannah areas

Côte d'Ivoire is facing significant environmental challenges due to the improper management of household waste and the extensive use of traditional wood charcoal, which leads to deforestation and increased greenhouse gas emissions. The proposed technical assistance aims to develop and implement a sustainable biochar production process that converts organic waste, particularly agricultural residues like cocoa pod husks, into biochar. This project will support the country's climate goals by providing an alternative to traditional charcoal and addressing waste management issues.

The objective of this technical assistance is to support Côte d'Ivoire in establishing a sustainable biochar production system using agricultural residues. The project will enhance the country’s capacity to mitigate and adapt to climate change by reducing deforestation, improving waste management, and providing a sustainable energy source.

The main outcomes of this technical assistance will include:

  • Awareness and Stakeholder Engagement: Conducting inception and other workshops to promote the adoption of biochar technology and sustainable waste management practices.

  • Tailored Biochar Production Process: Development of a biochar production process suited to Côte d'Ivoire’s specific organic waste streams and local environmental conditions.

  • Pilot Testing and Design Finalization: Testing of biochar production equipment in South Korea and developing preliminary designs for implementation in Côte d'Ivoire, ensuring compatibility with local contexts.

  • Capacity Building: Strengthening the technical and institutional capacity of local stakeholders, including government agencies, agricultural cooperatives, and waste management authorities.

  • Climate and Economic Impact Assessment: Evaluating the environmental and economic benefits of biochar through a standard project model in Côte d'Ivoire.

  • Long-Term Strategic and Financing Planning: Development of a plan and concept note to implement a standard project model with potential follow-up support from international/regional development banks (ex. West African Development Bank)
