Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) Power Generation System

With a module that’s twice as efficient as conventional silicon photovoltaic systems, this power generation system by Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. is designed for high solar radiation (DNI >6.5) and high-temperature areas. Solar panel installation occurs high above the ground in order to offer usable space below the panels. This space-saving feature is just one of the reasons why the CPV system is on tap to become the next-generation photovoltaic generator.

Context

In 2014, the energy sector contributed 53.4% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Viet Nam. The energy sector in general and power generation in particular plays an important role for achieving the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions under the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).

Objective

Pico & Micro Hydropower System: Low-Cost Hydroelectric Generator

The “Micro Hydropower System” developed by Nakayama Iron Works Ltd., is a type of hydroelectric system that can produce a few kW to 1 MW of electricity. Until now, the company has installed hydropower plants with a maximum capacity of 49.9kW, and they are now working on a project with a maximum capacity of 420kW. The technology can produce electricity using small streams as main resource for power generation.

The overall objective of the request is to develop a guideline for audit and calculation of the emission factors (EF) of fossil fuel thermal power plants to enhance quality of GHG inventory activities in energy sector. The request has direct link to the MRV implementation of power sector for NDC implementation.

Yes, the energy sector will be the important role of the mitigation targets. Regarding the Decision of Prime Minister for national inventory of GHG approved in 2012, MOIT has been requested to implement the GHG inventory for energy sector and annually making the report of GHG emission to MONRE. Hence the request is line with national strategies, and it becomes important input national communication and Biannual Update report to UNFCCC.

The request will enhance the audit and reporting capacity of the personnel’s of the fossil fuel based thermal plants and relevant government agencies with a focus on MOIT and MONRE. The request has also identified the key stakeholders and their roles to support the implementation of the technical assistance. These stakeholders are various endogenous departments/bodies including ministries and institutes who will get benefitted in terms of capacity enhancement in due course of the technical assistance.

Though the request has shown some level of readiness in term of the existing data and process for estimating electricity grid emission factor including the emission factors for the thermal power plant, it lacks the details on the combustion efficiency to report the sectoral emission on a larger scale for NDC assessment purpose. While the Emission Factor will be specific to Viet Nam, the approach adopted for estimating it and to undertake the Energy Efficiency audit has large potential for replication at regional level. The study will apply the methodology for EF calculation in 2 plants on pilot basis which may be replicated for all the he thermal power plants in Viet Nam.

STREAM: A Micro Hydropower System

STREAM Micro hydropower system, a run-of-river micro-hydropower generating system, can generate electricity extremely well in ultra-low head situations. Because it is so compact and easy to install, it is a good match for areas of de-centralized power generation. Common installations for its use include; agricultural irrigation canals, waterways with regulated water discharge, water treatment plants, and power plants.
