Networking & Collaboration

Technologies are vital to building climate-resilient, low-carbon societies. Many essential technologies already exist — the challenge is to get them deployed where they are needed, and to build the enabling environments to support technology innovation, adaptation and scale-up. An overwhelming number of developing countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement indicate a requirement for technology support and capacity building in order to achieve their commitments. To meet this need, the CTCN serves as a demand-driven and trusted partner, matching the needs of developing countries for climate change-related equipment, methods, capacity development, and policy advice with the world-class expertise of its Network and our collaborators.

Collaborations

Green Climate Fund

The Green Climate Fund catalyzes investment in transformative climate technologies. As the operating entities of the Convention - CTCN under the Technology Mechanism and GCF under the Financial Mechanism - both established under the CMA and governed by the COP, we work together to support developing countries in accessing finance for low-emission, climate-resilient development pathways. We place strong emphasis on country-driven priorities and coordinated national ownership.

Global Environment Facility

As one of the oldest and largest multilateral environmental funds, the Global Environment Facility supports a broad range of environmental projects, often smaller in scale. In partnership with the UN Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), our collaborative projects enhance countries’ adaptive management capacities to address climate challenges effectively.

World Intellectual Property Organization - WIPO

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) promotes the use of intellectual property to support innovation and technology development, including in the field of climate change. In collaboration with the CTCN, WIPO helps build capacity and facilitate access to the WIPO GREEN database, supporting the transfer and deployment of climate technologies in developing countries.

Adaptation Fund

The Adaptation Fund finances concrete climate adaptation projects that help vulnerable communities in developing countries adapt to climate change. Initiatives are based on country needs, views and priorities. Our joint efforts support countries to test, scale up and leverage innovative, transformative, and locally led climate adaptation technologies across the technology cycle and anchor these into National Systems of Innovation.

Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF)

The Women Engage for a Common Future champions gender equality and women’s leadership in environmental and climate action. Through our collaboration, we advance gender-just climate solutions that are inclusive, locally rooted, and responsive to the diverse needs of communities. By integrating gender-responsive approaches, we empower women and marginalized groups to lead transformative action at the grassroots level.

SF6 Transition Network

The SF₆ Transition Network is a global knowledge exchange platform on the management and phase-out of SF₆ , convening pioneers and interested stakeholders from government, industry, finance, international organizations, NGOs and academia to share experience, learn from each other, align approaches, and accelerate the transition away from SF₆ in the power sector.

RD&D Programmes

Exclusive to our Network members, our RD&D programmes provide a platform for knowledge exchange and the establishment of twinning institutional arrangements between Network members. With the support of our NDEs, we offer three modules that engage Network members in playing a central role in both North-South and South-South collaboration for climate technologies. The Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) is one of the nine stakeholder groups of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Established in 2009, the WGC now consists of 27 women’s and environmental civil society organizations, who are working to ensure that women’s voices are heard and their rights prioritized in the fight against climate change. The Women and Gender Constituency represents hundreds and thousands of people across the globe, with advocates from over 60 countries working for gender justice within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) are working in partnership, with co-funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), to accelerate the adoption, deployment, and investment in environmentally sound technologies in Asia and the Pacific.

The climate technology network secretariat, based in the Asia & the Pacific Office of UN Environment in Bangkok, works with national climate change technology focal points (NDEs of the Climate Technology Centre and Network) to support countries in scaling up the transfer of technologies for enabling implementation of pre-2020 actions and NDCs. The secretariat has a three-pronged approach:

                        - Creating and strengthening national institutional arrangements to facilitate climate technology transfer

                        - Knowledge and information sharing between established technology institutions and partner countries via a web-platform and e-newsletter to facilitate access to expert knowledge, news on emerging technologies, best practices, trainings, and private sector information

                        - Working with partner country focal points to identify priority areas and design and develop programmes based on policy and legal frameworks required to facilitate technology use and NDC implementation, as well as financing incentives and mechanisms to promote the use of technology
