Technologies Framework for Implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions for Pakistan

Technologies Framework for Implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions for Pakistan

Background

The Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) helps developing countries identify technology gaps and requirements needed to meet climate goals, directly supporting their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). By improving the TNA process, countries can more effectively align their strategies with NDC priorities, facilitating the transfer and effective implementation of essential technologies.

For Pakistan, as a signatory to the Paris Agreement, developing a comprehensive technology framework around its NDCs is crucial to ensure effective climate action. This framework should tackle technology needs, innovation, regulatory aspects, financing, and stakeholder engagement, focusing on areas such as waste management, water resources, renewable energy, and gender inclusion. The successful adoption of technologies relies on strong involvement from the government, private sector, and communities, along with overcoming financial, institutional, and social obstacles. This TA project aims to assist Pakistan in bridging gaps between national planning and provincial implementation, fostering collaboration across sectors to ensure the successful integration of technologies and achieving climate goals.

CTCN Support

This technical assistance seeks to support the development of an actionable Technology Roadmap for Pakistan, focused on deploying and scaling climate technologies to achieve the country’s climate change mitigation and adaptation goals under the updated NDCs. CTCN’s assistance shall enhance the institutional, technical, and financial capacities of the Ministry of Climate Change and key national stakeholders, enabling them to effectively identify, implement, and scale high-potential climate technologies.

Expected Outcome

The expected outcomes of this project include the following key outputs:

  • Development of implementation planning and communication documents.
  • Establishment of a Technology Roadmap Coordination Mechanism, including technical committees for waste and water sectors.
  • Identification and prioritization of climate technologies for high-impact sectors of waste management and water.
  • Development of a Technology Roadmap for NDC implementation.
  • Preparation of financing support to facilitate technology deployment.
