Innovation and technology play essential roles in restoring ecosystems, bolstering biodiversity, and securing finance for restoration. As climate change accelerates ecosystem decline, new technologies are improving monitoring, prediction, restoration, and long-term management. WIPO, together with the CTCN and Academy of Scientific Research & Technology of Egypt (ASRT), will launch the Green Technology Book 5th edition (GTB5), focused on ecosystem decline in land, oceans, freshwater and the cryosphere.

The event will showcase the work of several UN organizations involved in ecosystem restoration and their use of innovation and technology.

Lead organization and supporting partners:

WIPO GREEN is part of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a UN specialized agency promoting innovation and a balanced and effective intellectual property rights system.

Several UN organizations are involved in ecosystem restoration and the event will provide insight into these activities and their use of innovation technologies and other solutions.

  • Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) and Technology Executive Committee (TEC), both part of the Technology Mechanism of the UNFCCC will discuss how ecosystem restoration technologies are promoted in their work with member states.
  • Academy of Scientific Research & Technology (ASRT) will provide insight into the use of restoration technologies in Egypt.
  • United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will explain the role of innovation in addressing land degradation.
  • World Meteorological Organization (WMO) will highlight how Earth system observations and monitoring services contribute to tracking ecosystem impacts and supporting action.
  • Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, UNEP) will highlight how the Global Biodiversity Framework and safeguards help ensure equitable innovation from genetic resources while technology supports biodiversity conservation.
  • Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will explain the use of innovation in their reforestation activities.
  • Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) will provide a local perspective on green innovation.

About WIPO GREEN and the Green Technology Book

WIPO GREEN (WG) works to promote the deployment of innovation and technology for the global challenges of climate change, food security and the environment. This is done through on-the-ground matchmaking of solution seekers and technology owners, through the WIPO GREEN Database of Needs and Green Technologies, partner networks and publications such as the Green Technology Book. The database is an open, public and free resource for discovering and linking up to tangible solutions. It contains >140.000 technologies of which >7.500 are actual solutions uploaded by companies or WIPO GREEN. There is no requirement for technologies to have acquired intellectual property rights such as patents etc. The database is used for the matchmaking activities (Acceleration Projects), as well as for making the Green Technology Book. This annual WIPO flagship publication was first launched at COP27 on climate change adaptation technologies, the 2nd edition on mitigation technologies launched at COP28, the third ed. on energy solutions for climate change launched at COP29 and the fourth ed. on solutions for climate disasters launched at COP30 in Brazil. Each book provides analyses of the various technology fields of high relevance for climate change and showcase >200 actual technologies in each edition. It is a text-light, digital publication which since launch has had >1,9 million unique visitors and been downloaded in full >160.000 times, mostly from people in developing countries. It is also a matchmaking tool, as the technologies are linked to the WIPO GREEN Database collection, where many more technologies can be found, technology owners can be contacted directly and new solutions uploaded

Summary of the ecosystem edition:

Ecosystem restoration is shifting from periodic observation toward continuous environmental intelligence. By integrating satellites, AI, environmental DNA, and predictive digital twins, practitioners can forecast climate risks, simulate interventions, and deploy targeted restoration solutions. Across land, oceans, freshwater, and the cryosphere, innovation increasingly blends engineering with nature-based approaches to restore holistic ecological function and build climate resilience. Furthermore, advanced digital monitoring, reporting, and verification systems convert ecological outcomes into verifiable assets, unlocking crucial private climate finance. Ultimately, technology alone cannot replace urgent global emissions mitigation; enduring restoration success requires combining cutting-edge tools with strong governance, public institutions, and active community engagement.
