Background
The solutions to the climate crisis already exist; they are gender-just, locally driven, and community-led. Ambitious climate action cannot be achieved without amplifying the voices of the people who face climate impacts first and most directly.
For over a decade, the Gender Just Climate Solutions (GJCS) Awards have celebrated transformative initiatives that place women’s rights, equality, and local leadership at the centre of climate action. Organised by the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) and WECF International, this annual ceremony - one of the largest civil society side events at UNFCCC - honours grassroots and innovative projects that show how gender-just approaches can deliver effective, inclusive, and equitable climate solutions.
The 2026 ceremony blends a high-level event with a celebration. It gives winners the stage to speak for themselves, gives government representatives a concrete opportunity to commit to scaling up gender-just solutions, and gives the whole room a role through collective chants and music.
Objectives
- Celebrate and make visible three gender-just, locally led climate solutions.
- Inspire ambitious, gender-responsive climate decisions at COP31.
- Highlight the multiple social and environmental benefits of investing in gender-responsive, inclusive, participatory solutions for effective climate ambition at national and global levels.
- Present locally owned solutions that have demonstrated success on the ground and have a high potential for upscaling, shifting power relations, and ensuring women’s rights and leadership in the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
