Innovation & technology play essential roles in preparing for, responding to and rebuilding after climate-induced extreme events. The escalating urgency of these events is accelerating the development and deployment of innovative technologies and response measures.
WIPO, together with the Climate Technology Center & Network (CTCN) and Academy of Scientific Research & Technology of Egypt (ASRT), will launch the 4th edition of the Green Technology Book (GTB) and discuss its findings in relation to emergency preparedness and response.
The GTB disaster technology edition focuses on disasters in relation to: 1) water 2) drought 3) extreme temperatures and 4) response logistics. It also showcases early warning technologies and other preparedness solutions. Representatives from selected technology companies mentioned in the GTB will also present their solutions.
Lead organization:
WIPO GREEN is part of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a UN specialized agency promoting innovation and a balanced and effective intellectual property rights system.
Several UN organizations are involved in climate disaster response and the event will provide insight into these activities and their use of innovative technologies and other solutions.
- CTCN and the Technology Executive Committee (TEC) will discuss how disaster technologies are promoted in their work with member states.
- ASRT will give an insight into the use of disaster technologies in Egypt.
- United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will explain the role of innovation in drought situations.
- United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will present its Innovation Accelerator and how it used in disaster response.
- World Meteorological Organization (WMO) will present on the use of early warning technologies.
- United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) will explain how innovation and technology is used in their work and approaches.
WIPO GREEN works to promote the deployment of innovation and technology for the global challenges of climate change, food security and the environment. This is done through matchmaking of solution seekers and technology owners. One of the major tools is a large database of needs and green technologies which is an open, public and free resource for discovering and linking up to tangible solutions. The database contains >140.000 technologies of which 6.000+ are actual solutions uploaded by companies or WIPO GREEN. There is no requirement for technologies to have acquired intellectual property rights such as patents etc. The database is used for on-the-ground matchmaking activities such as acceleration projects, as well as for making the Green Technology Book. This new annual WIPO flagship publication, first launched at COP27 on climate change adaptation technologies, with the 2nd edition on mitigation technologies launched at COP28, and the third edition on energy solutions for climate change launched at COP29 provides an overview of solutions available in various sectors of high relevance for climate change. It is a text-light, digital publication which, since launch, has had >1,4 million unique visitors and been downloaded in full >77.000 times, mostly from people in developing countries.
