The Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) is providing technical assistance to enhance the capacity of Fiji’s Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways and other key stakeholders to promote climate-resilient agriculture.
Background
Fiji, a Pacific island nation, is acutely vulnerable to climate change impacts such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and changing rainfall patterns. These challenges threaten the agriculture sector, a cornerstone of Fiji's economy and the livelihood source for approximately 60% of its population. Agricultural lands face significant risks from saltwater intrusion, soil erosion, and extreme weather, leading to land degradation and reduced crop yields. Although Fiji has made progress through initiatives like the Climate Resilient Food Systems (CRFS) Alliance, it continues to face barriers such as outdated policies, insufficient technical capacity, and inadequate data management systems. Addressing these challenges is critical to ensuring food security, sustainable livelihoods, and economic resilience.
CTCN’s Support
The Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) is providing technical assistance to enhance the capacity of Fiji’s Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways and other key stakeholders to promote climate-resilient agriculture. This initiative will focus on revising outdated national agricultural policies, improving data management systems, and strengthening technical expertise. By facilitating the adoption and scaling up of climate-smart agricultural practices, CTCN aims to bolster Fiji's ability to adapt to climate change impacts while ensuring food security and sustainable livelihoods.
Expected Outcomes
Some of the expected outputs are:
- Enhanced technical capacity through training and workshops.
- Revised agricultural policies that integrate climate resilience, including updates to the Land Conservation and Improvement Act of 1953 and the National Rural Land Use Policy of 2005.
- Improved data management systems using modern technologies, such as drones, to enable real-time agricultural data collection.
- Increased awareness and adoption of climate-smart agriculture practices through study visits, media coverage, and community outreach.
- Development of a scale-up project concept note and capacity-building workshops to expand climate-resilient agricultural practices.
Seeking Experts
The CTCN invites qualified experts and firms to submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) to participate in this initiative. Interested parties should have demonstrated expertise in climate-resilient agriculture, policy revision, and data management systems. Full details of the project and requirements will be available in the tender documents provided after the EOI process closes.
