Support for Establishment of Tanzania Climate Innovation Centre (TCIC) within the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH)

Support for Establishment of Tanzania Climate Innovation Centre (TCIC) within the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH)

Background

Tanzania faces serious challenges from climate change, including unpredictable rainfall, prolonged droughts, and growing pressure on water and energy resources. At the same time, entrepreneurs and small businesses working on climate solutions struggle to access finance, skills, and tailored incubation support. This has slowed the adoption of clean and sustainable technologies that could help communities adapt and thrive.

To close these gaps, a national Climate Innovation Centre is proposed. Hosted at COSTECH, the centre will provide incubation, mentorship, financing options, and access to networks for entrepreneurs and SMEs. It will focus on developing and scaling climate technologies that are locally relevant, such as solar-powered irrigation and renewable energy for rural enterprises, while building the skills and partnerships needed to grow climate-focused businesses.

CTCN Support

The CTCN will provide technical assistance to design and operationalize the Tanzania Climate Innovation Centre. This includes addressing key barriers such as the lack of specialized incubation for climate start-ups, limited access to finance, weak R&D-commercialization links, and absence of supportive regulatory frameworks. The support will ensure that the centre is well structured, sustainable, and aligned with Tanzania’s national priorities.

Expected Outcome

The technical assistance will lead to the establishment of the Tanzania Climate Innovation Centre, supported by a digital platform and staffed with trained personnel. Key operational documents, including an annual plan and sustainability strategy, will be in place, enabling the centre to become a lasting hub for climate technology development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in Tanzania.
