Dr. Michelle Tiong is an Assistant Researcher at China University of Petroleum (Beijing), specializing in material science and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). With a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University (China), where she researched on the nano-engineered cement for CO₂ sequestration, and advanced degrees in Petroleum Geoscience from University College Dublin (Ireland) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (Malaysia), she bridges geoscience, engineering, and nanotechnology to advance sustainable energy solutions.
Dr. Tiong leads ground-breaking projects on self-sensing cementitious composites and in-situ CO₂ mineralization, securing prestigious grants such as China’s National Natural Science Foundation (RMB 380k) and Beijing Natural Science Foundation (RMB 200k). Her work integrates carbon nanomaterials and artificial enzymes to enhance CO₂ conversion efficiency by >10%, while her innovations in low-carbon cement have earned recognition in global competitions, including the Top 10 in China XPRIZE Carbon Removal and the Global Innovandi Open Challenge 2024.
A dynamic leader, Dr. Tiong was selected for the Women in Energy Storage Mentoring Program by GWNET and orchestrated high-profile bilateral events as Deputy Director of MAYCHAM China. She holds patents for ultrasonic-responsive carbon capture catalysts and has authored over a dozen peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on CCUS technologies, cement durability, and nanotechnology applications. Fluent in Chinese, English, and Malay, she actively mentors emerging talent and serves as a peer reviewer for leading journals like Journal of Cleaner Production and Construction and Building Materials.
Dr. Tiong’s multidisciplinary expertise, coupled with her commitment to scalable climate solutions, positions her as a visionary in transforming industrial waste into carbon-negative materials and advancing global decarbonization goals.
