Dastan is a multidisciplinary researcher and a professor (Assistant) in socioeconomics, environmental and regional economics at Mendel University in Brno. He obtained a PhD in economics and management of renewable resources from the Department of Forestry and Wood Economics and Policy, Mendel University in Brno, the Czech Republic. More so, he obtained a master's degree in Regional Development at Mendel University in Brno in 2016. Dastan obtained a Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration (B.A. Honors) from Kyambogo University in Uganda in 2011. He has many years of experience in research and teaching expertise in Africa, Europe, and the United States of America. During his PhD studies, he exchanged in the United States of America at the Louisiana State University in 2019, and the Centre for International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU), Justus Liebig Universität Giessen (Germany) during his Master's degree in 2015 respectively.
His current research focus is on deforestation and forest degradation, land use and climate change in Africa. Moreover, he is currently modelling pathways towards Zero Deforestation and poverty reduction in Africa. He has published extensively in global impact factor journals such as Scientific Data-Nature, The Royal Society, Sustainability, Energy and Land. More so, Dastan has been teaching natural resources economics, forest economics, and policy to master degree students as well as thesis supervisions. He is also a Researcher/Project Officer (Part-time) at CREA Hydro & Energy, z.s. (Czech Renewable Energy Alliance) Brno. Herein, he researches and advises on the European Union (EU) Water for Sustainable Development project to support EU SMEs for internationalization to East Africa and Latin America project activities in Smart Water and Energy.
