Presentation of the UN Environment Programme Gender Guidance Toolkit and discussion of the strategies to include gender in projects. The webinar was jointly organised by the UNEP Economy Division and the Gender and Safeguards Unit on the 18th of June 2020.

2020 was intended to be a pivotal year for the global gender equality agenda and global climate change ambition. It was supposed to be a year to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action and to celebrate the start of the Paris Agreement. Yet, the unexpected and rapid spread of the highly infectious novel coronavirus has set in our paths a mammoth challenge. The ensuing economic slowdown and the postponement of the UN Climate Conference to 2021 threaten to stall the world’s commitments to climate action.

The main conclusions indicated by the seven studies are the following: 
● The material type and weight of a shopping bag are important characteristics for determining its environmental impacts. A bag with the same material but double the weight has double the impact, unless it is reused more times or used to carry more goods. The LCAs in the meta-analysis indicate that a SUPB weighs approximately 6 g in China, India, Singapore and the US, but 18-20 g in Finland, Spain and the UK.

The key message for this brief is that conflict degrades the environment and environmental degradation can be a driver of conflicts. When climate change accelerates environmental degradation, the risk of conflict increases. This feedback loop is demonstrated in the case of South Sudan. The international community engaged in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must understand these interconnections between environment and security in view of the onset of climate change.

Towards a zero-emissions, efficient and resilient buildings and construction sector

This guide is about taking account of, and managing, ecosystems to help people adapt to climate change in coastal areas: coastal Ecosystem based Adaptation (EBA). Vital to human wellbeing, adaptation to climate change is increasingly important in international policy discussions such as the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which have acknowledged the potential importance of EBA in meeting this challenge.

TNA: key findings, lessons and experience to date

The  combination of  district energy and building-level efficiency is helping cities around the world realise  cost-effective decarbonisation of heat and cool demand in buildings.

UNEP, in collaboration with the University of Geneva and the National Adaptation Planning Global Support Programme, has launch a new Massive On-line Open Course (MOOC) on “Pathways to climate change adaptation: the case of Small Island Developing States”. This on-line course is free and open to everybody.

The UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2022: The Closing Window — Climate crisis calls for rapid transformation of societies provides an updated assessment of the gap between where we are heading in terms of global GHG emissions and where we need to be in 2030 to get on track towards the temperature goal of the Paris Agreement. This year’s report emphasizes the urgency of transformation, with a specific focus on key sectors, food systems and financial systems.

Climate-monitoring networks in Azerbaijan are still insufficiently developed, comprehensive and reliable data is missing as well as there is a lack of harmonised methodologies for undertaking climate change related assessments, including Vulnerability Impact Assessment (VIA) studies. Comparison of vulnerabilities across different sectors or ecosystems is complicated because most climate change vulnerability and impact assessments use their own sets of indicators, often created without proper consultation or agreement with respective governmental authorities. 

This technical assistance advances Bosnia-Herzegovina's Determined Contribution to:

• Introduce renewable energy sources in the existing district heating systems and to construct new district heating systems fuelled by renewable energy sources.

• Nationally Determined Contribution to rationalize energy consumption and efficiency in all sectors and raise awareness about the long-term financial benefits of energy efficiency. The position is that energy-efficiency measures will have a positive impact on economic growth, technology innovation and poverty reduction.

Context

Development of biosolids/digestate standards for use in the agricultural sector will not have a direct climate impact but the use of biosolids use can lead to broader adoption of the anaerobic digestion technology. Each country has a different set of standards depending on the discharge standards of treated effluents on land, water body, sea or rivers etc. and the quality of the digestate is largely dependent on the effluent discharge standards.
