The focus of this qualitative research is on the dynamic interrelation between social innovation, the practice field and various mechanisms of social change. Therefore the guiding meta-question for the case studies of SI DRIVE is focusing on mechanisms of social change.

I am pleased to introduce the WWF Climate Savers Innovation Reports, which reveal how world-leading companies are taking imaginative, effective steps to make major cuts in their CO2 emissions. Innovation is central to successful business. No successful company rests on its laurels – the need to move forward demands new ideas and new approaches, and this is exactly what the Climate Savers companies have demonstrated.

Building on the 2018 National Hydrogen Roadmap, CSIRO has created a new report outlining research, development and demonstration priorities and opportunities for the nation.

The new report outlines steps to translate Australia's strong hydrogen research capability into a key pillar of the nation’s energy and export profile. It found that investing in research can solve industry challenges to create five key national opportunities: hydrogen imports, and integration of hydrogen into gas networks, transport, electricity systems, and industrial processes.

The IEA’s Energy Technology RD&D Budget Database allows users to track trends in spending by energy technology in IEA countries back to 1974. Data is collected from central or federal government budgets, as well as the budgets of state-owned companies, for spending on a range of sectors including energy efficiency, renewables, nuclear power, fossil fuels, hydrogen and fuel cells, and more. All figures refer to total public energy RD&D expenditure data, converted from current prices in national currencies to US dollar PPPs in constant prices.

This case study provides an overview of energy research, development and demonstration (RD&D) investments in six major emerging economies: Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, Mexico, China and South Africa (referred to as ‘BRIMCS’ countries). RD&D expenditures are differentiated by technology category (fossil fuel, nuclear, electricity, renewables, efficiency, and other) and by funding source (government, state‐owned enterprises, private industry, not‐for‐profit organisations), based on the most recent published data available in each country.

Water resources are greatly impacted by the effects of climate change, and so it comes as no surprise that many of the programmes implemented by PPCR countries focus on enhancing water resilience. The case studies presented here, provide some examples of how PPCR countries in the Caribbean are working towards achieving this goal through decentralised solution. 

This study summarises the important progress South Africa has made in developing its policy and institutional architecture in response to climate change through the lens of multi-level governance and multi-stakeholder climate action. It is written for both policy makers and development practitioners working in South Africa and is based on the four-year project known as V-LED, or Vertical Integration and Learning for Low-Emission Development in Africa and Southeast Asia.
