In response to the massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico University of Pittsburgh investigators have developed a technique for separating oil from water via a cotton filter coated with a chemical that blocks oil while allowing water to pass through. The filter was successfully tested off the coast of Louisiana and shown to simultaneously clean water and recover the oil.

Technology Applications:
- Production of renewable non-greenhouse gas producing and distributed energy in the form of hydrogen gas
- Using the hydrogen gas to generate electricity with a fuel cell or as a feedstock for synthesis of a wide range of industrially-relevant chemicals and fuels
- De-nitrification of wastewater specifically in municipal water treatment facilities
- Treatment of a wide range of biogenic waste streams while recovering energy
- Production of ammonia and chemicals derived from ammonia

Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) systems in wastewater treatment plants offer several operational and economic advantages compared to conventional wastewater treatment plants. One such advantage is reduced energy requirements. By incorporating Suez membrane technology, MBR systems eliminate the need for secondary clarifiers and tertiary treatment. This allows for increased performance. With over two decades of membrane bioreactor experience, SUEZ delivers advanced MBR technology and solutions for a wide scope of needs.
