This Technology Transfer Advances Tanzania's
- Nationally Determined Contribution to enhance the use of renewable energy potential, including geothermal, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions economy wide between 10-20% by 2030 relative to the BAU scenario of 138 - 153 Million tones of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e).
Context
Tanzania is like other developing countries that are experiencing the impacts of global climate change manifesting in different economic sectors essential for Tanzanians livelihood and subsistence which include water resources, energy generation, food security, ecosystem biodiversity and human health. Tanzania has traditionally depended on hydropower and fossil fuels to generate its power but this energy mix is unsustainable largely due to persistent and frequent draughts and fossil price fluctuations which have adversely resulted in frequent power shortages in the country. The Tanzanian government is therefore focusing on diversifying its energy portfolio by exploring renewable sources of energy such as geothermal energy. Uitilization of geothermal resources face many barriers incluidng financial barriers and technical capacity.
CTCN Support
Support Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) Limited on the development of geothermal direct use projects:
- Conduct pre-feasibility studies on at least four prioritized direct use applications for Kiejo-Mbaka
- Develop a capacity building programme on direct use project design, material selection and equipment requirements, engineering cost estimations, project evaluation and project modelling
Expected Impact
- Strengthened TGDC capacity on development of geothermal resources in Tanzania
- Direct use opportunities identified and prioritized based on viability and practicability (sites) for geothermal direct use business
- Pre-feasibility studies for at least four direct use applications conducted for further projects development
- Direct use application pilot or demonstration project developed in a short run and commercial projects in a long run
