This study investigates the different ways in which women and men are affected by the impacts from climate change, and possible differences in the resulting migration strategies. An empirical study was conducted in the southern part of the Mexican state of Chiapas, an area severely affected by phenomena associated with climate change, primarily increased hurricanes and tropical storms, and changes in rainfall patterns, causing landslides, flooding and changes in the dry and rainy seasons. The results of this case study point to important gender differences both in terms of vulnerabilities and impacts from climate change and in the migration strategies used by women and by men.
