This report explores how energy service companies (ESCOs) may be incorporated into a model for the introduction of energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives in poor communities on a large scale, using South Africa as an example. It details how ESCOs operate, how they have and could continue to evolve in South Africa, and the benefits of ESCOs. The report also provides examples of ESCOs successes in bringing energy services to the poor in developing countries.
