Coral reef nurseries are a fascinating, new and innovative approach at preserving coral reefs in Belize and potentially the world. This project sought to identify and propagate corals that have survived previous bleaching episodes, disease epidemics, and hurricanes that were directly or indirectly related to increasing water temperatures. Research on surviving or recovering coral genotypes will potentially enable the enhancement or acceleration of natural climate change adaptation processes, rather than passively monitoring coral reefs for climate change impacts and observing the decline of live coral cover over time.
