This briefing addresses the turbulent but promising biomass market in South Africa. It describes the situation and what could be if the market and policy were to embrace biomass. Already with a growing energy appetite, 20 per cent of urban and over half of rural populations are without energy services. The authors make the argument that biomass could play a large part in solving that problem.
