Traditional livestock raising in many cases is related to low indices of productivity, profitability and negative impacts for the environment. Silvopastoral systems constitute a strategy to improve the economic, social and environmental indicators on cattle farms. Also, they have potential to adjust the climatic changes such as prolonged droughts and periods of abundant rain, which are variations that increase economic and environmental vulnerability of agricultural enterprises. In some regions of Central America, cattle producers through local and/or acquired knowledge recognize the economic, social and environmental importance of the silvopastoral systems. In addition, they relate them to adaptation to climate change as a source of food resources in periods of long drought and for shade to mitigate the effect of high temperatures.
