This, the second installment of the Renewable Energy Technologies Cost Analysis Series, finds that the cost of concentrating solar power generation depends greatly on the technology in question. The levelized cost of energy for concentrating solar plants range from USD 0.14 to USD 0.36/kWh for parabolic trough installations and USD 0.17/kWh to USD 0.29/kWh for solar tower installations. The report identifies good potential for cost reductions in the near future because of the technology's relative youth. The sources of potential cost savings include economies of scale in both plant size and manufacturing, technology improvements, learning effects, and more competitive supply chains.
