To complement its Good Environmental Practices and Good Socio-economic Practices bioenergy reports, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has identified a range of policy instruments that can be used to require or promote—directly or indirectly—good environmental and socio-economic practices in bioenergy feedstock production, and to discourage bad practices. The four main categories of policy instruments are mandates with sustainability requirements, national standards for certification, financial incentives, and capacity building.
