This report builds on the earlier version of the global greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement database, conducted by McKinsey together with the Swedish utility, Vattenfall, in 2009. It incorporates updated assessments of the development of low-carbon technologies, updated macro-economic assessments, a significantly more detailed understanding of abatement potential in different regions and industries, an assessment of investment and financing needs in addition to cost estimates, and the incorporation of implementation scenarios for a more dynamic understanding of how abatement reductions could unfold. This study does not assess policies and regulatory choices but instead provides an objective and uniform set of data that can serve as a starting point when discussing how best to achieve GHG emission reductions.
