The charcoal sector provides one of the greatest opportunities to prevent carbon emissions in least developed countries (LDCs) while fostering significant sustainable development benefits. The objective of this nationally appropriate mitigation action (NAMA) study is to provide Uganda with an opportunity to help shape its future low carbon development. The study focuses on the three middle components of the value chain – production, transportation and retail – and provides information about the Ugandan context, the stakeholders involved, the relevant policies and institutional framework, technology options for improved production, measuring, reporting and verification, and the assessment of support needs. It also presents the next steps in the NAMA process, in particular, the development of a NAMA design document and, eventually, implementation. Finally, the study identifies potential donors to fund these stages.
