This chapter in the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National GHG Inventories outlines methodologies for estimating process-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the use of carbonate raw materials. It covers cement production, lime production and glass production and other mineral industries such as ceramics, soda ash use and carbonate consumption for non-metallurgical magnesia production. It presents the two broad pathways for release of CO2 from carbonates: calcination and the acid-induced release of CO2. It focuses on the emissions resulting from calcination of carbonate materials and does not consider energy-related emissions. The basic emissions calculations for all carbonate-burning industries are similar and based on common formula weights and CO2 ratios.
