This publication highlights the projects undertaken by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to maximize access to energy for all. The report underlines ADB"s commitment to especially the rural poor, as a pillar of its energy policy, and as a key part of its fight against poverty, and for inclusive, environmentally sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific region. The Energy for All Initiative, launched by ADB in 2008, supports ADB"s efforts to increase investment in projects that improve access to modern energy. The projects were implemented in partnership with governments, development partners, other multilaterals, and the private sector in several countries of Asia and Pacific. The challenges pose by diversity in the nature of the work both technological and approaches used, specific implementation issues under varied geographical regions are also highlighted. Since there are many, effective ways of providing access to energy, but no single, easy fix a variety of technologies and approaches were considered and applied. The role of renewable energy and the maturation of renewable technologies as a feasible option for energy access is also discussed.
