At the 2008 Hokkaido Toyako Summit, the Group of Eight (G8) Leaders set a goal of broad deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) by 2020 and made eight high-level recommendations to achieve this goal, namely (1) demonstrating carbon dioxide capture and storage, (2) taking concerted international action, (3) bridging the financial gap for demonstration, (4) creating value for carbon dioxide for commercialisation of CCS, (5) establishing legal and regulatory frameworks, (6) communicating with the public, (7) building infrastructure, and (8) retrofitting with CCS capture. This study reports the progress made between 2008 and 2010 to address these recommendations and identifies next steps to achieve the G8 goal on CCS.
