According to this study, the Malawi Government has intensified the use of treadle pumps. The treadle pump as a result is gaining popularity among small-holder farmers throughout the country. This study was conducted in two purposely selected districts of Blantyre in the Southern Region and Mchinji in the Central Region of Malawi. The findings of the study demonstrate that the treadle pump is important for the generation of income, reduction of poverty and maintenance of food security among smallholder farmers in Malawi. To fully realize this potential, some constraints on the dissemination of treadle pumps, such as water shortage, relatively high prices for treadle pumps and spare parts, lack of capital for manufacturing of the treadle pumps and lack of well-organized markets need to be resolved.
