This guideline provides a systematic approach to selecting and qualifying geological sites and projects for carbon capture and storage (CCS). The approach described reflects the current understanding of best industry practice and aims to drive toward a consensus among project developers and regulators on proper site selection and management. To this end, the guideline recognizes the need for site selection and management tailored to the unique characteristics of each site. In particular, the guideline recognizes that site selection and management should aim to demonstrate that any inherent or engineered risks or uncertainties are adequately controlled and managed. A key intention of the guideline is to harmonize implementation of CCS in compliance with regulations, international standards, and directives while avoiding additional documentation and reporting requirements that may incur project delays and additional expense.
