This report investigates energy use of small and medium enterprises in the manufacturing sector in Canada. The top three energy-consuming groups are chemicals and chemical products, food, and wood products. The report finds that the three industries with the most potential to increase energy efficiency—through upgrading lighting, air compressors, and motors—are fabricated metal products, printing and publishing, and non-metal mineral products. While the analysis is specific to Canada, recommended measures for energy improvement can be implemented in industry across countries.
