This paper reviews the potential global demand for biofuels and the implications of this for land use and its interaction with food agriculture. Key findings include that biofuels are important components for future transport energy demand; co-products from conventional crops (first generation biofuels) and efficient biorefining of "new" biomass sources (second-generation biofuels) enhance fuel GHG savings versus fossil fuels; competitive and synergistic interactions can exist between biofuel production and food agriculture; and policy development that seeks to deliver both sustainable fuel and food production is a major international focus.
