Southeast Asia is widely considered one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change, with women expected to be disproportionately impacted. Produced by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), this training-of-trainers manual is designed to help trainers to deliver a capacity enhancement workshop (CEW) to rural women on gender and climate change, within a Southeast Asian context. The purpose of the manual is to provide the information, tools and skills needed to deliver CEWs to rural women farmers and elected leaders so as to: raise their awareness of the cause and impacts of climate change, empower them to successfully adapt, highlight gender-differentiated impacts and adaptation roles and help them monitor and evaluate training activities. The manual begins by outlining goals and expectations, and defining key concepts such as gender, vulnerability, and adaptation, amongst others. It then moves on to explaining the workshop structure as found in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. The workshop is split into four sessions: environment, climate change and the human footprint; gender-differentiated agricultural and food security impacts; understanding gender in agriculture and food security; and what women can do to adapt to changing environments and secure future agriculture-related livelihoods. Tips and techniques are provided to aid with training and the facilitation of participation. The rest of the manual forms a comprehensive resource of basic, up-to-date knowledge on climate change, adaptation and gender, combining graphs, statistics, relevant case studies and activities. Sections include the various environmental systems and cycles involved in climate, a review of likely climate scenarios in the region, and likely impacts on agriculture and food security. At each stage, jargon and technical terms are fully explained in an accessible manner, with additional resources provided after every thematic section.
