Food and nutrition security, health and gender equality: partnerships for climate-resilient sustainable development

This policy brief provides key recommendations with a view to RIO+20 and the post 2015 MDG agenda. It argues that food and nutrition security, climate change, health, gender equality and environmental degradation are closely interlinked, requiring integrated strategies. Increasing women's engagement, empowerment and leadership can help counter these challenges. There are five key messages presented: - A gender-responsive and human rights approach is required to ensure health and food and nutrition security. This is essential for poverty eradication and climate-resilient sustainable development. With equal access to productive resources, it is estimated that women could increase their yields on their farms by 20-30%. - A focus on both rural and urban poor is necessary to eradicate hunger and attain food and nutrition security. A number recommendations for the post-2015 MDG framework include: protection from food price spikes; capacity building initiatives; and climate change mitigation measures. - Health is a pre-condition and an outcome of environmental, social and economic development. - Gender equity and equality are fundamental to achieving sustainable, climate-resilient development. Gender dimensions of both decision-making and access to resources should be examined, and empowerment encouraged through increased access to education, information and credit amongst others. - Partnerships, both multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder, are crucial for achieving common goals on food and nutrition security, health and climate change. Priorities must include protecting and building human and social capital, addressing inequalities and building government capacity.
