In support of the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All initiative and to promote the region's energy future, the energy ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) adopted a the ECOWAS Bioenergy Strategic Framework on 31 October 2012. This document is Resolution Four from the ECOWAS Eleventh Meeting of the Ministers in Charge of Energy. The ECOWAS Bioenergy Strategic Framework is intended to enhance sustainable bioenergy production and use within the ECOWAS member states. The ministers envision the framework contributing to universal access to modern energy services, a safer and more sustainable domestic energy for cooking, and increased food security. They propose to do so through several action points, including resource assessment and planning, knowledge sharing and the creation of financing mechanisms. The framework mandates that the ECOWAS Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency coordinate the framework among member states.
