This case study describes the sustainability-oriented urban planning in Curitiba, Brazil. Curitiba's model of development is known as "Transit-Oriented Development" (TOD) because of its emphasis on building high-density residential, business, and recreational areas close to public transportation hubs. Curitiba has reduced average transit distances by increasing pedestrian walkways and improving bus service while simultaneously decreasing parking availability. The city has also introduced a low-emissions "Bus Rapid Transit" system.
