This paper is a climate and environmental assessment that was conducted as part of the “Business Case” for “Tackling Acid and Burns Violence in Asia”. It involves applying a climate and environmental sensitivity analysis to identify climate and environmental impacts and opportunities, and preparing the climate and environment assurance note.
The paper clarifies that the assessment highlights a possible link between climate induced disasters/ environmental degradation with increasing vulnerability and an increase in gender based violence. However, it points that this impact is deemed low in terms of likelihood and significance.
On the other hand, the document finds that long term support and rehabilitation, including vocational, educational and livelihood opportunities could indirectly build resilience of women to future changes in the climate and the environment. Nevertheless, the magnitude and likelihood of this benefit are both low.
The author shows that “Tackling Acid and Burns Violence in Asia” may have negative impacts on environment through resource use primarily from office based activities as well as GHG emissions from project transportation. Nonetheless, these effects can be mitigated by:
inclusion of environmental criteria in the grant letter
implementation of environmental management measures
training on disaster and climate risk management
