Available capacity-building support
CTCN Technical Assistance
The CTCN provides technical assistance in response to requests submitted by developing countries via their nationally-selected focal points, or National Designated Entities (NDEs). Upon receipt of such requests, the CTC mobilizes its global Network of climate technology experts to design and deliver a customized solution tailored to local needs.
- Full-scale technical assistance. Technical assistance on climate technologies is provided:
- To developing countries at the request of their NDEs
- Free of charge
- At local, national or regional levels
- To academic, public, NGO, or private sector entities
- For a broad range of adaptation and mitigation technologies
- At all stages of the technology cycle
- Technical Assistance (FTA): the CTCN provides Fast Technical Assistance (FTA) consisting of a short time response (up to 2 months) with a limited value of 15,000 USD, and referring to technology prioritisation, endogenous technologies assessment, concept note development, policies and measures that are immediate priorities for the requesting country.
CTCN Capacity Building
The CTCN facilitates the provision of information, training and support to build and/or strengthen the capacity of developing countries to identify technology options, make technology choices and operate, maintain and adapt technology. As part of this effort, the CTCN strives to identify, disseminate and assist in developing analytical tools, policies and best practices for country-driven planning to support the dissemination of environmentally sound technologies. It does this through NDE training, webinars, regional forums and the development of a technology library. Special focus is also paid to providing tailored capacity building services to least developed countries (LDCs).
News
CTCN Network: Network Members form a broad community of climate technology stakeholders, including academic, finance, non-government, private sector, public sector, and research entities, as well as over 150+ National Designated Entities (CTCN national focal points selected by their countries). Network Membership provides access to a diverse global community of climate technology users, providers and financiers under the umbrella of the UNFCCC Technology Mechanism. Through its network, the CTCN mobilises policy and technical expertise to deliver technology solutions, capacity building and implementation advice to developing countries. The CTCN actively seeks Network members from all geographic regions with an array of sector experience. The membership is cost free.
CTCN in Antigua and Barbuda: Improving severe weather resilience of essential public service buildings: In late 2017, Hurricane Irma left 95% of Barbuda’s buildings and infrastructure damaged or destroyed, while all of Barbuda’s 1,800 inhabitants had to be evacuated from the island. In order to lead a sustainable reconstruction process that reflects projected climate change impacts, the country needed a technical assistance to adapt infrastructure for disaster resilience and safeguard key services during and following emergency situations. The CTCN developed a comprehensive strategy to adapt the facilities of existing public utilities to maintain structural, electrical and water supply integrity under various disaster scenarios. Detailed work packages consisting of site plans, retrofit diagrams, and cost estimates for 34 key public buildings have been prepared. Technical and strategic input was provided into the Antigua and Barbuda Government’s on-going planning for adaptation funding, policy, and legislative action with national capacity building as a crosscutting theme. The results of this technical assistance are now informing the development of a concept note for Green Climate Fund reconstruction support. Through technology collaboration, Ecuador’s agricultural sector is finding solutions to reduce harmful emissions and creating new income opportunities
As part of its technical assistance in Ecuador, the CTCN prepared a technological analysis of various biodigesters to identify the most relevant options for local conditions, and selected models were installed as part of a pilot programme at small and medium livestock farms. The CTCN partners worked with farmers to calculate net emissions of methane and nitrous oxide from livestock activity, and produce a cost-benefit analysis of the technology and its contribution to income in livestock farming. Based on the positive results, the Ministry of Ecuador is exploring how to support the introduction of biodigesters in the agricultural sector. The International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering provided examples from other Latin American countries, including national biogas programmes, through a publication produced in Spanish and English. The document presents the biodigesters (their function, products, types), explains the basis for national biogas programs, and how they function. https://www.ctc-n.org/news/through-technology-collaboration-ecuador-s-agricultural-sector-finding-solutions-reduce-harmful
