Solar energy is becoming an increasingly realistic alternative in the Gothenburg region. The conditions for solar energy are roughly similar to those in Germany, where full sunshine generates solar energy equivalent to 20 nuclear power stations.

Some of Sweden's largest solar panel installations are to be found in the Gothenburg region. In Hjällbo, in northeastern Gothenburg, 700 square metres of solar panels have been installed on the roofs of three apartment blocks since 2011. The Nya Ullevi stadium has also had solar panels since 2007. The panels generate electricity roughly equivalent to the annual consumption for ground lighting at Nya Ullevi.
