Wind power is an endless and renewable source of energy that has been used for thousands of years. It plays an important role in Umeå Energis investment in renewable energy and is in line with the company’s aim to be completely carbon neutral by 2018. In total, the municipality owned company Umeå Energi owns ten wind turbines, which provide significant climate benefits. These turbines are situated in the towns of Hörnefors, Holmsund and Robertsfors. Hörnefors wind power plant consists of eleven turbines with an output of 2 MW each from two different manufacturers, Vestas and Enercon. The annual output is approximately 56 000 MWh of electricity. Parts of the power plant in Hörnefors have been sold to Bostaden AB and Kvarkenvind, but Umeå Energi still operate and have and reporting responsibilities for those turbines.

Umeå Energi wants to develop wind power in the Umeå region, both through building and owning wind turbines itself, but also by helping other players who want to build. Because of this, Umeå Energi has hired wind power technicians to help others with the administration and servicing of wind turbines.
