The Kristianstad recycling park is one of the best examples of the Swedish system of waste management. The material and energy recycling rate is currently 97% and the goal is to reach 100% in the near future. By increasing the volume of material recycled, the amount of material deposited has been decreased by 40,000 tons. The facility was opened in 2001 and it then replaced a previous landfill site.

Through extensive cooperation arrangements with the region’s heat and power plants the recycling park delivers household waste to Beleverket in Hässleholm and SYSAV in Malmö, sells untreated wood to the CHP plant Allöverket in Kristianstad, and some metal waste can be sold at a profit, due to high raw material prices. Since 2011 the Recycling Park is owned and operated by the multinational waste management company Stena Recycling. The company SAVEKO Recycling is also located at the park. This company offers meaningful work to its 35 disabled employees, who manage a second-hand shop and prepare electronic waste for recycling by removing parts classified as hazardous waste.
