Background: Traditional methods such as atomic adsorption spectroscopy electrochemical separation techniques and high-performance liquid chromatography used for analysis of heavy metal ions in water are not suitable for on-site or online analysis. Biosensors have been proven to be low cost and effective for real-time information. Technology Description: This invention relates to a metal ion biosensor containing active DNAzymes and oligonucleotides immobilized on the sensor surface for specific detection of a wide range of metal ions eg Cu2+ Pb2+ Zn2+. Detection can be done by quartz crystal microbalance surface Plasmon Resonance or other low cost detection methods. Applications: 1) Water quality 2) Food toxicity detection
