Nickel phosphides based electrochemical catalysts have been invented having significantly high activity for hydrogen oxidation and hydrogen evolution reactions. Research has shown a nickel phosphide having significantly improved exchange current density and specific activity versus pristine nickel. In a fuel cell test nickel phosphide anode catalyst-based hydrogen fuel cell exhibited improved current density.
