This patented invention is a compact microfabricated fuel cell designed with three-dimensionally patterned cell geometry for high power density. This innovative approach enhances the area of electrolyte/catalyst interfaces. These increased three-phase (electrolyte catalyst and reactant) reaction zones promote reactions that generate higher power output than previous architectures. Applications: Fuel Cells
1) High power output - increased active interface area enhances power density 2) Automated fabrication - thin-film processing methods and assembly techniques require little or no manual assembly 3) Tunable gas permeation and electrical conductivity because shape features for gas passages and current collectors can be defined by photolithography 4) Compact and lightweight: micro-architecture creates more reaction area per volume 5) Efficient routing of reactant gases by membrane shape does not require additional separation plates
