Over the past 15-20 years, Lomma Hamn has been transformed from an industrial harbor into an attractive, appreciated, and accessible residential area. Lomma municipality has not only taken care of an environmental debt and created a well-known brand but also experienced a 30 percent increase in population compared to before the redevelopment. This has been achieved with determination, a long-term perspective and focus on sustainability.

A new way of managing and focusing on sustainability was introduced at the very beginning of the project. Together with Lund University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, an environmental program was developed and is continually evaluated. The key words in the program are experience transfer for phase improvement. The program is based on builders reporting measures to achieve as high environmental performance as possible within the framework of accepted methods. After each building subproject is completed, the result and the level of sustainability is evaluated to take the expertise into the next stage of development. The environmental program includes several aspects of sustainability that are included in the evaluation process, for example, energy performance, waste management and the inclusion of green infrastructure in the local neighborhood.

In addition to focusing on the built environment, the area has also been evaluated based on attractiveness and visitor perception. Over a thousand people with connections to Lomma Hamn, residents, business owners, beach and restaurant guests have been asked about their experience of the area. The responses include topics such as security, well-being, experience of greenery and what is missing from the area. There were also responses about the ease of getting to and from the area without a car. Based on the evaluation, the municipality has gathered valuable experience, allowing improvements and new additions to the area.

Lomma Hamn is well planned, systematically evaluated and a great source of knowledge about urban development in the region. Lomma municipality is now applying this knowledge and experience to the project Bjärreds vångar, a new urban development in the northern part of the municipality that will be strongly characterized by sustainability, architectural design, and biological diversity. This project is still in the planning phase and can be followed at https://www.lomma.se.
