Region Skåne is the organization that manages the health care in the southernmost part of Sweden with over one million inhabitants. The board has set the goal that all its own and rented buildings and transports are to be fossil-free by 2020. This demanding goal involves a strategy to work together with the management teams of the energy companies that deliver heat to the municipalities in the region to eliminate fossil fuels.
The first step to achieve this goal is to partner with other real estate companies and municipalities around a letter-of-intent stating the shared purpose of achieving this high-level goal. The step that has now been taken together with Lunds Energi, one of the largest utilities companies in the region, to initiate the development of a joint strategy and a detailed plan that includes all the activities that have to be performed in order to achieve it. The project involves extensive partnership for the development of fossil-free heating systems between a number of private and public organizations in Skåne. It is the explicit goal of Region Skåne to not only purchase the share of heat that is produced in fossil-free processes, but to actually work together with the utilities companies in the region in order to make all heat that is produced free from fossil fuels and thereby contribute to making the entire heating systems in the region fossil-free.
