Environmentally Friendly Epoxy

Technology

Background: Epoxies are thermosetting polymers formed through the combination of a resin and a hardener. They are extensively used for coatings for adhesives and as a base for composite materials. Epoxies are recognized for their versatility high tensile strength and high temperature resistance. However due to environmental and health concerns there is a growing demand for epoxies that are safer for both the user and environment. Description: Michigan State University’s technology is the formulation of an eco-friendly epoxy. This epoxy uses a biodegradable glucose-based copolymer glucose maleic acid ester vinyl copolymer (GMAEVC) in place of the typical synthetic accelerators used in most epoxies. The resulting polymer matrix exhibits strong mechanical performance and is effective for use as an eco-friendly biocomposite. Applications: (1) Biocomposites (2) Automotive (3) Building materials (4) A wide variety of other industrial applications IP Protection Status: US 6723802 (issued Apr 20 2004)

Benefits

(1) Environmentally friendly composition: This formulation contains a biodegradable glucose-based copolymer that acts as a hardener eliminating the need for toxic curing agents. (2) High performance: The cured polymer matrix is stable up to 300°C and maintains its mechanical performance in wet environments. The cured polymer has a glass transition temperature as high as 100°C with a storage modulus of 2500MPa. (3) Demonstrated applications as a biocomposite: The polymer has good compatibility with hydrophilic natural fibers making it an ideal base for environmentally friendly biocomposites.
