Carbon Capture and Storage for Bioenergy Plant


In the journey towards a carbon-negative energy production, Sweden’s first Bio-CCS pilot plant was commissioned in 2019. This project is a part of Stockholm’s target towards a positive carbon footprint by 2040. Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage (Bio-CCS) means that carbon dioxide that arises from the combustion of biofuels is separated and then stored. Stockholm Exergi has, with the support of the Swedish Energy Agency, installed a test facility at the bio-cogeneration plant in Värtan, Stockholm. The goal is to secure the technology for separating the carbon dioxide from the flue gases.

The technology behind carbon capture is Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC). It has been assessed to be the technology that best meets the requirements set for a plant located at Värtaverket, due to the high energy efficiency, space requirements, high availability, ability to scale up to full scale, environmental friendliness and the relatively low risk associated with the technology.

There is a potential to capture up to 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year at Stockholm’s Värtan CHP plant. The pilot plant is among the first in the world to test this technology in an operational environment.
