Wind power is an endless and renewable source of energy that has been used for thousands of years. It plays an important role in Umeå Energis investment in renewable energy and is in line with the company’s aim to be completely carbon neutral by 2018. In total, the municipality owned company Umeå Energi owns ten wind turbines, which provide significant climate benefits. These turbines are situated in the towns of Hörnefors, Holmsund and Robertsfors. Hörnefors wind power plant consists of eleven turbines with an output of 2 MW each from two different manufacturers, Vestas and Enercon.

Vertical Wind has developed a new and exciting wind power technology based on a vertical axis wind turbine with a cable-wound direct driven generator. The turbine does not need a pitch or a yawing mechanism and the direct driven generator eliminates the need of a gearbox. The robust and simple technology with few moving and sensitive parts compared to conventional wind turbines, gives a higher availability and reliability as well as lower cost for maintenance. Furthermore, this type of wind turbine is quieter than its horizontal counterpart.

The Giraffe 2.0 by InnoVentum is a combined carport and charging station harvesting green energy from the wind and sun to power your e-vehicle.The Giraffe 2.0 is made of renewable (wood) and recycled (metal) materials bringing green power stations to the next level of sustainability. The trees used for the structure have absorbed several tons of CO2 from the atmosphere before their wood takes the unique shape of a Giraffe – all this carbon dioxide is preserved within the structure for decades, making a positive contribution to the climate.

Core Invention: the 12m wooden tower

The first InnoVentum wooden tower was created in 2011 as a result of a collaborative university competition between Lund University in Sweden and ENSTIB in France. The first prototype was installed in the same year.
