    A climate change monitoring system integrates satellite observations, ground-based data and forecast models to monitor and forecast changes in the weather and climate. A historical record of spot measurements is built up over time, which provides the data to enable statistical analysis and the identification of mean values, trends and variations. The better the information available, the more the climate can be understood and the more accurately future conditions can be assessed, at the local, regional, national and global level.

    Rainfall can provide some of the cleanest naturally occurring water that is available. There is considerable scope for the collection of rainwater when it falls, before huge losses occur due to evaporation, transpiration, and runoff and drainage - before it becomes contaminated by natural means or man-made activities. Rainwater harvesting is a particularly suitable technology for areas where there is no surface water, or where groundwater is deep or inaccessible due to hard ground conditions, or where it is too salty or acidic.

    This article, which is part of the Water Front edition, focuses on how human-induced climate change will worsen the global water crisis through melting glaciers, rainfall changes, droughts and stronger, more unpredictable natural disasters, which in turn will affect poverty reduction and livelihood security. The author discusses how robust strategies are needed to make human development climate proof, as it is a matter of survival for billions of people. However, she adds, climate proofing is challenging as it is about the distribution of resources.
