Törnebybäcken, a stream which drains most of the Kalmar countryside just west of Kalmar, is one of the municipality's most nutrient-loaded water bodies. Kalmar airport contributes to the supply of mainly nitrogen that is used to keep the runways unfrozen. Through a unique partnership between CAA and Kalmar municipality, a large proportion of mainly nitrogen, but also phosphorus that would otherwise be added to the West Lake (a bay of the Baltic Sea), are deleted in the landscaped wetland park Kalmar Dämme.

Cover crops are fast growing crops such as winter rye and clovers that are planted between periods of regular crop cultivation. By covering the soil surface, they protect the soil from erosion, and if leguminous, they fix nitrogen. Later, when ploughed under, they provide humus and carbon to the soil, as well as nitrogen for the subsequent crop.

Bioremediation of toxic polluting compounds is an important part of modern ecological reclamation projects. Technologies in this field use living materials often bacteria that are able to utilize pollutants for life processes and release non-hazardous metabolites. Some bacteria are able to perform this function using their endogenous genome and some have been genetically modified to fulfill this role.
